- Semi-naked youth brought to safety
Bhopal: Dramatic scenes unfolded at the city’s iconic Arch Bridge over the Upper Lake on Monday afternoon when a semi-naked youth climbed nearly 50 feet up the structure, threatening to jump into the water. The incident, which began around 1:15 PM, triggered immediate panic among commuters who alerted the authorities via the Dial 112 emergency service.
A coordinated rescue operation was swiftly launched by the Talaiya police and a team from the Bhopal Municipal Corporation. According to Station House Officer (SHO) Deepak Dahariya, the youth appeared to be mentally unstable and was shouting suicide threats from the heights, although he voiced no specific demands. Rescuers, including municipal diver Sheikh Asif, engaged the man in a tense negotiation, eventually using persuasion to convince him to climb down safely.
Local residents identified the individual as a frequent sight in the Kamala Park and surrounding areas, where he often seeks alms. Fortunately, the hour-long standoff ended without injury. Following the rescue, the police took the man into custody to ensure he receives the necessary medical and psychological support, preventing what could have been a tragic end at the scenic landmark.
