Sonia Gandhi condemns ‘attack’ on MGNREGA, pledges Congress support

New Delhi, Dec 20 (UNI) Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi Saturday strongly criticized the government’s decision to scrap the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), calling it an “attack” on the rights of rural poor.
In a video message, Gandhi recalled the Congress-led UPA government’s unanimous passage of MGNREGA in 2005, saying it had provided a lifeline to millions of rural families.
“Modi government has bulldozed MGNREGA, removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name and altering its framework without consultation,” Gandhi said.
She alleged the government was ignoring the interests of farmers, labourers, and marginalised communities. Gandhi pledged Congress’s support to the struggle against the government’s move, saying, “We will fight this black law.”
The MGNREGA has been a crucial safety net for rural India, providing guaranteed employment and empowering gram panchayats. Gandhi’s remarks come amid widespread protests against the government’s decision to replace MGNREGA with the Viksit Bharat G RAM G Bill.
