Dispute over Maggi triggers violence at GMC

  • 15 students suspended

Bhopal: Gandhi Medical College witnessed chaos late on December 4 after a minor dispute over Maggi at Sudhamrit Café escalated into a violent clash between MBBS students. The students, returning from AIIMS Bhopal’s Retina Fest, got into an argument over who would be served first. Some students were reportedly in an inebriated state, causing the situation to spiral out of control.

Within minutes, day scholars and hostellers confronted each other, with the fight intensifying to the use of rods and batons. Several students attempting to intervene were injured. Among them, Paras Maraiya and Dr. Shailesh Chaudhary suffered serious injuries. Dr. Shailesh was admitted to the ICU, while Paras was discharged after treatment.

Taking serious note of the incident, GMC convened an emergency disciplinary meeting on December 5. Fifteen students were suspended, and those staying in hostels were ordered to vacate their rooms immediately.

Dean Dr. Kavita N. Singh said such acts of indiscipline are unacceptable in a medical institution and assured strict action to prevent future incidents.
