Lok Sabha adjourned amid DMK protests over Tamil Nadu lamp lighting row

New Delhi, Dec 5 (UNI) Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 12 noon on Friday following protests by DMK members over a contentious lamp lighting issue in Tamil Nadu.
The protests relate to a dispute involving the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government’s petition to the Supreme Court against a Madras High Court order. The order permits devotees of the Arulmighu Subramaniya Swamy Temple to light the traditional ‘Karthigai Deepam lamp’ on the ‘Deepathoon,’ a stone lamp pillar on Thiruparankundram hillock near a dargah.
DMK members sought to raise the issue in the House and staged a protest in the Well of the House. Speaker Om Birla intervened, reminding the members that the matter is sub judice and urged them to return to their seats.
Meanwhile, the Madurai district administration on Wednesday night imposed prohibitory orders in the temple town of Tirupparankundram amid protests by Hindu groups seeking to light the Karthigai Deepam lamp at the ‘dheepathoon’ (pillar) atop the hill, near a dargah, following directions from Justice G R Swaminathan of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.
