Green rules get tougher in Kerala elections as fines surge past Rs 46 lakh

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 4 (UNI) Kerala has strictly enforced a “green protocol” for its local body elections, aimed at eliminating banned materials, including thermocol, single-use plastics, and other non-biodegradable campaign items.

The authorities have deployed inspection teams who carried out 6,500 checks across various districts and detected 340 violations. Cumulative fines for these violations have crossed Rs 46 lakh across 14 districts. District-level nodal officers and Suchitwa Mission teams, acting on behalf of the State Election Commission, conducted the inspections.

During these checks, officials seized nearly two tonnes of banned materials, including thermocol, single-use plastics, and prohibited decorative items.

The guidelines mandate that PVC flex boards are not allowed. Instead, campaign materials must use Pollution Control Board–approved reusable polyethylene or 100 percent cotton fabric in place of nylon, polyester, and Korean cloth.

Decorative materials made of thermocol and sunpack are also banned, with only eco-friendly alternatives permitted.

In food and water distribution areas, steel or ceramic utensils must be used instead of disposable plastic or thermocol cups and plates.

All permitted campaign materials must carry a PVC-free logo along with the printer’s name, phone number and order number, ensuring transparency and preventing counterfeit eco-friendly products from entering the market.

The public can report any green protocol violations during the election period by sending evidence to the dedicated WhatsApp number available, officials said.
