Rahul Gandhi blasts Centre for ‘shocking’ response on caste census

New Delhi, Dec 3 (UNI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Wednesday slammed the Centre for its response to his query on caste census in Parliament, calling it “shocking” and an “open betrayal of trust” with the country’s Bahujans.

Gandhi, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, said he had asked the government about the concrete framework and timeline for conducting a caste census, but received an unsatisfactory response.

“In Parliament, I asked the government a question about the caste census – their response is shocking. No concrete framework, no time-bound plan, no discussion in Parliament, and no dialogue with the public,” Gandhi said in a post on handle X. He added that the government’s stance on caste census is an “open betrayal of trust” with the country’s Bahujans.

Gandhi pointed out that the government has not even shown any desire to learn from the strategies of successful caste censuses in other states.

Bihar, Telangana, and Karnataka have conducted caste censuses, which have helped them in their development programmes.

The Congress leader’s remarks come amid ongoing debates on the need for a caste census in India.

The government had earlier announced plans to conduct a caste census in 2027, but Gandhi has demanded a concrete plan and timeline for the exercise.
