Bhopal: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Bhopal, on Wednesday observed a two-minute silence across all its manufacturing units and offices in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the Bhopal gas tragedy. The tribute marked the beginning of “Industrial Safety Week”, scheduled from 3 to 9 December, during which a series of activities aimed at enhancing workplace safety will be conducted. These include safety awareness lectures, safety talks, extensive inspections, gate-side safety announcements, factory-wide display of safety banners, firefighting training and multiple mock drills.
Reflecting on the catastrophic lessons of the 1984 disaster, BHEL conducted a comprehensive mock drill in the Gas and Power Plant zone to assess its preparedness for potential emergencies. After the drill, teams from CISF-Fire, GPX and the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Department assembled at the designated point to review shortcomings and discuss measures for improvement.
CISF Assistant Commandant underscored the importance of situational awareness, urging individuals to always consider their emergency exit route in unfamiliar settings. The HSE Head commended the robust safety systems in place at the gas and power plants and praised the prompt response demonstrated by CISF personnel during the mock exercise.
