Former Maharashtra Minister Bharat Rajabhau Bondre passes away at 83

Buldhana, Dec 3 (UNI) Former state minister and senior political leader Bharat Rajabhau Bondre, widely known across Buldhana district as the “water-man”, passed away on Tuesday due to age-related ailments.

He was 83.

Bondre, a prominent figure in the political landscape of Chikhli constituency for several decades, served multiple terms as a legislator. He first entered the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1972 on an Indian National Congress ticket, and subsequently won elections in 1980, 1985 (Congress-I) and 1990, establishing his long-standing influence in the region.

A close associate of Sharad Pawar throughout his career, Bondre held several important portfolios in the state cabinet, including Education, Industry and Irrigation (Water Resources).

His tenure in the Irrigation department saw the initiation and expansion of numerous small and medium-scale projects in Buldhana district.

Major projects such as the Khadakpurna and Jigav irrigation schemes were developed under his leadership, contributing to his reputation as an advocate for water-resource development.

Even after stepping back from active politics in recent years, Bondre continued to maintain close engagement with irrigation authorities. He regularly followed up on ongoing projects and remained a respected figure among officials in the Water Resources Department.

His death has prompted widespread condolences from supporters and residents of Buldhana district. Many have described him as a development-oriented leader known for his integrity and commitment to public welfare.

Bondre’s passing marks the end of an era in regional water-resource advocacy, leaving numerous irrigation projects and local communities mourning the loss of a leader who shaped their progress for decades.
