AIIMS Bhopal performs life-changing kyphoplasty for cancer patient

Bhopal: AIIMS Bhopal has further strengthened its advanced pain-management services by successfully performing a complex kyphoplasty procedure on a cancer patient suffering from metastatic vertebral collapse at the D5 level. The patient had been in severe, persistent pain for days despite high doses of morphine. The procedure, performed under local anesthesia, provided immediate pain relief, and the patient was fit for discharge within an hour.
Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive technique in which a balloon is inserted into the fractured vertebra to restore its height. The created cavity is then filled with a special bone-like cement, stabilizing the bone and significantly reducing pain.
This procedure is highly effective for patients with vertebral compression fractures caused by cancer, osteoporosis, or injury. It offers rapid stability, improves spinal alignment, and restores mobility, especially in elderly patients with weakened bones due to osteoporosis.
The procedure was led by Dr. Anuj Jain, with team members Dr. Nirav, Dr. Gopi and Dr. Nikhil. AIIMS Bhopal’s leadership, including Executive Director Prof. (Dr.) Madhabananda Kar and HOD Dr. Vaishali Waindeskar, provided vital support.
