Lucknow, Dec 1 (UNI) Top seeds Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand clinched their second consecutive Syed Modi International women’s doubles crown with a hard-fought 17-21, 21-13, 21-15 win over Japan’s Kaho Osawa and Mai Tanabe in the final at the Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium.
According to Olympics.com, the first game saw Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand trail 11-9 at the interval before conceding the opener.
Ranked No. 14 in the world, the Indian pair recovered from a game down in the 76-minute contest to retain their title. Treesa and Gayatri conceded the opener but mounted a strong comeback. They took charge early in the second game, leading 11–5 at the break before forcing a decider.
Riding the momentum, the defending champions surged to another 11–5 lead in the third game and maintained control to close out the match, securing their second straight Syed Modi International title. The duo had previously finished as runners-up at the 2022 edition.
With the victory, Treesa and Gayatri became the first Indian doubles team to win a BWF World Tour title this year. India’s only other successes on the circuit this season have come in men’s singles, through Lakshya Sen and Ayush Shetty at the Australian and US Opens, respectively.
In the men’s singles final, former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth narrowly missed out on ending his title drought, falling 16–21, 21–8, 22–20 to Hong Kong China’s Jason Gunawan.
Srikanth rebounded strongly after losing the opening game and dominated the second to force a decider. He saved a match point late in the third but eventually went down in the tie-break, suffering his first defeat in three meetings with Gunawan.
Srikanth, who last lifted a BWF title at the 2017 French Open, had previously won the Syed Modi International crown in 2016.
