New Delhi, Nov 29 (UNI) Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese married his fiancé Jodie Haydon in a private ceremony at his official residence in Canberra on Saturday, becoming the first Prime Minister of the country to marry while in office.
The details were not disclosed since their engagement on Valentine’s Day last year.
The ceremony was attended by close friends and family members, Australian media reported.
“We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends,” Albanese and Haydon said in a statement.
The wedding was the first for Haydon, 47. Albanese, 62, was previously married to former NSW deputy premier Carmel Tebbutt for 19 years. They have a son, Nathan, but separated in 2019, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
Haydon’s parents Bill and Pauline Haydon, walked her down the aisle. Her five-year-old niece, Ella, was the flower girl. The Prime Minister’s dog, Toto, was the ringbearer.
Opposition Leader Sussan Ley congratulated the newly married couple. “Congratulations to Anthony and Jodie. I wish them every happiness as they continue building their lives together,” she said in a statement.
Haydon’s brother Patrick was the witness while the couple made their vows. Albanese’ cousin, Helen Golden, walked the couple down the aisle.
Haydon wore a flowing white dress with long sleeves by Sydney designer Romance was Born, while the Prime Minister wore a suit from Australian menswear store MJ Bale. The wedding rings were supplied by Cerrone Jewellers in Leichhardt, Sydney, where Albanese had an engagement ring designed for Haydon, Sydney Morning Herald said.
