Los Angeles, Nov 25 (UNI) Actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh missed out on the Best Actor award at the 53rd International Emmy Awards 2025, where he had earned a nomination for his acclaimed performance in Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila.
The top honour in the Best Actor category went to Spanish actor Oriol Pla for Yo, adicto [I, Addict]. Amar Singh Chamkila also did not win in the Best TV Movie/Mini-Series category.
Diljit, who received his first-ever International Emmy nomination, walked the red carpet with filmmaker Imtiaz Ali and others. The singer-actor made a striking appearance in a shimmery suit jacket paired with a crisp white shirt, black bow tie, black trousers, and his signature black turban.
His nomination was widely celebrated as a significant moment for India on the global stage, especially for a film that showcased the life and legacy of Punjab’s legendary folk singer Amar Singh Chamkila. Alongside Oriol Pla, Diljit was also competing against David Mitchell for Ludwig and Diego Vasquez for One Hundred Years of Solitude.
Directed by Imtiaz Ali, Amar Singh Chamkila recounts the journey of the iconic Punjabi artist often referred to as the “Elvis of Punjab.” Chamkila rose to stardom in the 1980s with his bold lyrics and electrifying performances, before he and his wife Amarjot Kaur were tragically killed in 1988 at the age of 27.
Released on Netflix in April 2024, the film stars Parineeti Chopra alongside Dosanjh and is written by Imtiaz Ali and Sajid Ali. Its live-recorded folk music and emotionally resonant storytelling have earned widespread praise.
India has enjoyed notable success at the International Emmys in recent years—Netflix’s Delhi Crime won Best Drama Series in 2020, while comedian Vir Das earned an Emmy in 2021 for his Netflix special Vir Das: For India.
