Sydney, Nov 23 (UNI) India’s top-ranked men’s singles shuttler Lakshya Sen clinched his sixth career BWF World Tour title, and his first of the season, by winning the Australian Open 2025 in commanding fashion on Sunday.
According to Olympics.com, Sen, needed 38 minutes for a clinical 21-15, 21-11 victory over world No. 26 Yushi Tanaka of Japan in the final of the BWF Super 500 tournament. This was the first head-to-head meeting between the two shuttlers.
Sen’s triumph in Sydney is his first BWF World Tour title since the Syed Modi International in December last year.
Sen took control early in the opening game, stringing together four straight points to lead 7-3. Tanaka briefly closed in at 17-15, but the Indian badminton player, seeded seventh, responded with another four-point surge to wrap up the game.
The second game unfolded on similar lines as Sen built a six-point advantage at the interval before closing out the match with ease.
This triumph marks Sen’s first BWF World Tour title since winning the Syed Modi International in December 2024. His growing list of titles includes the Super 100 titles in 2019 – the Dutch Open and SaarLorLux Open – along with the India Open Super 500 in 2022 and the Canada Open Super 500 in 2023.
Sen also became only the second Indian badminton player to win a title on the BWF World Tour this year. Ayush Shetty won the US Open Super 300 title in June.
He carried momentum into the final after saving three match points in a gritty semi-final victory over Chou Tien Chen on Saturday. In the quarter-finals, Lakshya Sen beat compatriot Ayush Shetty.
Earlier this year, Lakshya finished as a runner-up at the Hong Kong Open and also featured in two semi-finals, including the Kumamoto Masters last week.
