G20 Summit: PM Modi calls for new growth model, citing environmental and social costs

New Delhi, Nov 22 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a fundamental re-evaluation of the global economic growth model, saying existing parameters have failed vast populations and damaged the planet.

Addressing the 1st session of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg titled ‘Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth – Leaving No One Behind’, PM Modi highlighted the disproportionate impact of current development models on the developing world, particularly Africa.

“The growth we’ve seen so far has left a large population resource-deprived and led to nature’s over-exploitation. Africa has suffered the most,” PM Modi stated. He proposed adopting India’s civilizational value of Integral Humanism, which views humans, society, and nature as an integrated whole.

The Prime Minister suggested establishing a Global Traditional Knowledge Repository to preserve traditional and eco-balanced lifestyles. He also proposed the G20-Africa Skills Multiplier initiative to train one million certified trainers in Africa over the next decade.

He stressed the need for collective responsibility in tackling global security and health crises, proposing a G20 Global Healthcare Response team.

He also highlighted the threat of global drug trafficking, proposing a G20 Initiative on Countering the Drug-Terror Nexus to disrupt illicit funds and dismantle criminal organizations.

PM Modi reaffirmed India’s solidarity with Africa, emphasizing the importance of amplifying the Global South’s voice in multilateral institutions. “We must work together to make the voices of the Global South louder in all global institutions,” he said.
