Young innovators from Sikkim shine at Children’s Science Exhibition

  • Honored by Paryavaran Sanskriti Trust

Bhopal: The 52nd National Children’s Science Exhibition in the capital showcased an inspiring display of innovation as young scientists Mrinal Gurung, Srijal Gurung, and their mentor Rakesh Gurung from PM Shri SRBG Sen Secondary School, Kaluk (Sikkim), were honored for their exceptional project on paper waste management. The recognition was presented by Sushil Kumar Jain, President of the Paryavaran Sanskriti Trust.

Explaining their project, Mrinal and Srijal noted that their school faces a significant challenge with paper waste, generating nearly 2–3 tons every 4–5 months. To address this issue, they developed a simple, cost-effective, and eco-friendly method to recycle waste paper into TLMs (Teaching Learning Materials) and notebooks. Their aim is to promote a culture of recycling and reuse, especially within educational institutions.

They highlighted that India produces nearly 25 million tons of waste paper annually, but only 25–28% of it is recycled, posing a serious threat to the environment. They believe that encouraging recycling at the school level can significantly reduce this burden.

Looking ahead, the young innovators plan to establish a student-run recycling business within their school, with profits dedicated to welfare and charitable activities. Their initiative has received admiration for combining practical learning with environmental responsibility.

Sarang to attend closing ceremony

The closing ceremony of the exhibition will be held on Saturday, at 12 noon at the Regional Institute of Education (RIE), in the presence of Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare, Vishwas Sarang. Mayor Malti Rai will also be present at the closing ceremony.

Union Secretary, School Education and Literacy Department, Sanjay Kumar, and Director, National Innovation Foundation, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, Dr. Arvind C. Ranade will also be present.
