Cyber alert: Unmasking the vicious ‘Sextortion’ trap

Digital blackmail: A threat to privacy

The Cyber Crime Police Commissionerate, Bhopal, has issued a grave warning about the rising threat of “Sextortion”—a predatory form of online sexual exploitation. Sextortion occurs when an individual threatens to publicly share private, intimate, or compromising photos/videos to force a victim into meeting their demands. These demands often include sending more explicit material, paying money, or performing other tasks.

This is a serious crime where blackmailers, who can be strangers or acquaintances, exploit sexual material. They frequently use the threat of sharing content with family, friends, or on social media. Criminals often initiate contact via social media, dating apps, or email, sometimes using fake profiles to build trust before trapping victims with recorded video calls. A key tactic is pressuring the victim for an immediate transfer of funds.

= Stay safe: A shield against predators

Sextortion can be devastating, causing severe mental distress, financial loss, and, tragically, leading to suicide in some cases due to shame and fear. The perpetrators often return to demand money repeatedly.

= Advisory: Stay vigilant, stay safe

The best defense is vigilance. Never share private photos or videos with strangers. Strengthen your social media privacy settings and never download suspicious links or apps. If you are being blackmailed, do not pay the money.

We urge all readers, and especially our youth and women, to be aware: Your digital safety is paramount. If you or someone you know is a victim, immediately cease all communication with the perpetrator, secure all evidence (screenshots), and report the incident to your local police, the Cyber Crime Cell, or call the National Helpline 1930 or Bhopal Cyber Crime at 9479990636. Inform your friends and family about this scam.
