Delhi residents wake up to chilly mornings as mercury drops to three-year low

New Delhi, Nov 17 (UNI) Delhi woke up to a chilly morning on Monday, with the minimum temperature slipping to 8.7°C, 3.6 degrees below normal and the lowest November reading in the past three years, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In recent years, the lowest minimum temperature for the month was recorded on November 29, 2022, at 7.3 degrees Celsius. While November’s lowest minimum temperature was 9.2 degrees Celsius in 2023 and 9.5 degrees Celsius in 2024, IMD data showed.

Despite the frigid mornings, the shining sun during the daytime kept the maximum temperature for Monday at 27.1 degrees Celsius, well within the range of the city’s normal for the month.

Experts indicated that the decline in the peak temperatures is expected once the city witnesses rainfall.

Vice President (Meteorology and Climate Change), Skymet, Mahesh Palawat, said the mercury is expected to drop further once Delhi receives rainfall. “Till it rains, the day temperature will not fall. After rain, temperatures will dip more rapidly,” he said.

Light rain is likely in the coming days, which may lead to colder early mornings in the capital, he added. On Monday, the maximum humidity level in Delhi stood at 95 per cent at 5:30 pm, according to data from the met department. Meanwhile, the capital last year recorded a dry November.
