Shimla, Nov 13 (UNI) The cold wave tightened its grip over Himachal Pradesh on Thursday as night temperatures dipped sharply across the state, pushing several high-altitude regions into sub-zero conditions.
The coldest temperature was recorded at Tabo Monastery in Lahaul Spiti, where the mercury slipped to minus 7.4°C, according to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla.
Other tribal belts also froze, with Keylong and Kukumseri at minus 3.3°C and minus 3.1°C respectively, while Kalpa in Kinnaur stood at minus 0.4°C. Tourist resorts experienced a sharp chill as well: Manali recorded 2.5°C, Narkanda 2.6°C, Solan 2.6°C, and Reckong Peo 2.2°C. Kufri remained colder at 4.7°C.
State capital Shimla recorded a minimum of 8.2 degrees, while Dharamshala settled at 9.4 and Solan 2.4 degrees. Mandi recorded 6.3 degrees, Una 8, Bilaspur 8.3, Kangra 6.5, Nahan 9.5, Bhuntar 3.5 and Jubberhatti Airport 10 degrees. The steep decline in mercury is attributed to clear skies, longer night hours, and cold winds sweeping across the mountain passes. Markets in interior regions wore a deserted look except in major tourist towns.
Despite the cold wave, agricultural activity continues. Farmers are busy sowing rabi crops and cutting fodder for winter storage. Apple growers have begun applying manure and lime to orchards, clearing tree beds, and managing weeds. Experts note that a higher accumulation of chilling hours will reduce the need for pesticides and improve fruit yield.
Moderate fog was reported in Bilaspur with reduced visibility around Sundernagar, prompting caution for early morning commuters.
The IMD has predicted dry weather across Himachal Pradesh for the next two days, with no warning of precipitation. Cold wave conditions are expected to persist, particularly in high-altitude regions.
