Bhopal Metro awaits November launch after election delay

  • PM likely to flag off the city’s first metro service

Bhopal; The much-awaited commercial operation of the Bhopal Metro has been postponed from October to November due to the Bihar assembly elections. The state government is now preparing for a formal launch this month, with expectations that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may visit Bhopal to inaugurate the service.

Earlier, the government had aimed to start the Metro in October. In preparation, two key inspections by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) were conducted in September and October. Metro Commissioner Garg and his team reviewed the Metro depot at Subhash Nagar and the 6.22-kilometer priority corridor, which includes the Subhash Nagar and AIIMS stations. The team carried out a detailed two-hour inspection to assess safety, operations, and infrastructure readiness.

A third and final CMRS visit is expected this week. The Commissioner will examine the tracks, depot, and all stations before submitting a comprehensive report to the government. Once the approval is granted, the official launch date will be finalized.

The Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) has already given its clearance report, marking another milestone in the project’s progress. Following the successful launch of the Indore Metro in May, the Bhopal Metro is now in its final stage of preparation, with work accelerating at the remaining three stations. If schedules hold, Bhopal will soon join India’s growing list of metro-connected cities.
