Bhopal: A cement concrete slab on the bridge built over Gate No. 8 of Bhopal’s Kerwa Dam collapsed on Tuesday afternoon, triggering concern over the dam’s structural safety. Fortunately, there were no casualties, though traffic movement has been restricted as a precautionary measure.
Constructed in 1965, Kerwa Dam is among the older dams in the region and predates the Bhadbhada Dam. It serves as an important water source for the Kolar area of Bhopal.
An eyewitness who had crossed the bridge moments before the incident, said, “I was walking across the slab around 9 a.m. when it suddenly gave way. A few seconds’ delay could have cost several lives.” The bridge is frequently used by residents of nearby villages.
Officials said that during the rainy season, the bridge witnesses heavy foot traffic from visitors. Fortunately, the mishap occurred during an off-season period, averting a potential tragedy.
