Polling underway amid tight security in Tarn Taran bypoll

Chandigarh, Nov 11 (UNI) Voting is underway for the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election in Punjab, with polling beginning at 7 am and scheduled to continue until 6 pm on Tuesday.

Fifteen candidates are in the fray for the seat, which became vacant following the death of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Kashmir Singh Sohal, who was elected in 2022.

A total of 222 polling booths have been set up across the constituency. For the first time in a bypoll, fourteen companies of central security forces have been deployed to ensure peaceful voting. Officials have classified 114 booths as “sensitive,” where additional security measures have been implemented.

The electorate in Tarn Taran stands at over 1.92 lakh voters, comprising 100,933 male voters, 91,897 female voters, and eight from the third gender category. Counting of votes will be held on November 14.

In a new political development, the outfit led by Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, known for his pro-Khalistan stance, has fielded a candidate in this election.

Local police have been put on high alert to maintain order. Special arrangements, including queue management and live webcasting from all polling stations, have been made to ensure transparency and smooth conduct of the poll.
