Placenta restores sight to 13 youngsters at AIIMS Bhopal

  • Amniotic membrane surgery brings hope to victims of carbide gun injuries

Bhopal: At AIIMS Bhopal, 13 patients have regained their eyesight through an innovative medical treatment using the placenta of newborn babies. The placenta’s amniotic membrane, previously discarded as waste after childbirth, is now a life-changing solution for severe eye injuries. Doctors refer to it as a “living bandage” that aids in healing wounds and maintaining corneal transparency.

While this advanced treatment costs between Rs 40,000 and 70,000 in private hospitals, AIIMS Bhopal offers it free for Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries, charging only Rs 250 for non-Ayushman patients.

Treating carbide gun injury victims

All 13 treated patients suffered eye injuries from carbide guns, which have been banned in Madhya Pradesh following orders from CM Dr. Mohan Yadav. Among them was 11-year-old Raja from Narmadapuram, who was treated at AIIMS on October 29. After receiving an amniotic membrane transplant, 80% of his vision was restored within just 15 days.

Doctors report that 12 of the 13 treated patients have been discharged, most with significant vision recovery due to timely intervention.

What Is the Amniotic Membrane?

According to ophthalmologist Dr. Aditi Dubey of Gandhi Medical College, the amniotic membrane is the innermost layer of the placenta. It contains natural growth factors, anti-inflammatory proteins, and healing elements, making it ideal for treating eye injuries, burns, or infections.

This membrane is sterilized and preserved after delivery for medical use, serving as a biological bandage that promotes tissue repair when applied to the cornea or conjunctiva.

AIIMS data indicates that around 70 patients in Bhopal and 150 across Madhya Pradesh have undergone this treatment following carbide gun accidents. The therapy has stimulated the natural regeneration of stem cells in their eyes, helping many partially or fully regain their sight — marking a breakthrough in affordable ophthalmic care.
