Navi Mumbai, Nov 1 (UNI) Veteran Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna today announced his retirement from professional tennis, bringing to a close a remarkable 20-year career on the international circuit.
In an emotional message shared with fans and the media, Bopanna reflected on his journey from a small town in Kodagu, India, to competing under the brightest lights on the world’s biggest stages. He described tennis as more than a game, saying it had provided him purpose, strength, and belief throughout his life.
Bopanna paid tribute to his family, including his parents, sister Rashmi, wife Supriya, and daughter Tridha, acknowledging their unwavering support and sacrifices.
“Every match I played in these last years, I played for you, to show that dreams are worth fighting for,” he wrote about his daughter.
He also expressed gratitude to his coaches, trainers, partners, and fellow players. Special mention was made of his long-time coach Scott, whom he credited for shaping him both as a player and a person. Bopanna thanked his fans for their love, noting it had been a constant source of motivation.
Representing India on the global stage was, according to Bopanna, the greatest honor of his career. “Each time I walked onto the court with the tricolour beside my name, I felt its pride and its value. Every serve, every point, every match – I played for that flag, for that feeling, for my country,” he said.
While stepping away from competitive tennis, Bopanna affirmed his desire to give back to the sport, particularly to young players from small towns, encouraging them to believe in their potential. “This isn’t goodbye… it’s a thank you to everyone who shaped me, guided me, supported me, and loved me,” he concluded.
Bopanna ends his career as one of India’s most celebrated doubles players, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, dedication, and inspiration for future generations.
