New Delhi, Oct 30 (UNI) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will lead the Indian delegation from the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, on an official visit to Bhutan from Oct 30-Nov 2, an official statement said today.
The FM will begin her official tour with a visit to the historic Sangchen Choekhor Monastery, built in 1765 and home to over 100 monks who are engaged in advanced Buddhist studies, later today.
The Minister will take stock of key projects being implemented with support of the Government of India, including Kurichhu Hydropower Plant Dam and Powerhouse, the Gyalsung Academy, the Sangchen Choekhor Monastery and Punakha Dzong.
Sitharaman is also scheduled to call on the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Dasho Tshering Tobgay. The Minister will hold a bilateral meeting with the Finance Minister of Bhutan, Lekey Dorji, to discuss avenues for further strengthening India-Bhutan economic and financial cooperation.
Sitharaman will also attend the presentations on key development initiatives, including : (i) Energy sector of Bhutan by Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPCL), (ii) Bhutan’s 21st century economic roadmap, (iii) Banking/Financial sector in Bhutan by Druk PNB and Bank of Bhutan, (iv) Gelephu Mindfulness City Project.
She will also visit the Cottage & Small Industries (CSI) Market, where she will witness a transaction using India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI). It reflects the growing digital and financial connectivity between the two nations.
In the last leg of her tour, the FM will visit Punakha Dzong, which is Bhutan’s second-oldest and second-largest dzong. On her way there, she will also interact with Bhutanese farmers to understand their agricultural practices, challenges, and opportunities.
The visit underscores India’s enduring partnership with Bhutan, which is rooted in mutual-respect, trust, and shared commitment to progress and prosperity in the region.
