Congress accuses BJP of turning cities into centres of chaos and corruption

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Congress spokesperson Dr Vikram Choudhary has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of betraying urban India by transforming cities into hubs of chaos, disorder, and corruption during its two decades of rule.

Dr Choudhary said that while the BJP has long been regarded as the “party of cities”, it has failed to provide a coherent urban policy or prepare cities for future challenges. “Today, cities in Madhya Pradesh are trapped in a web of illegal colonies, traffic congestion, sewage crises, and unplanned construction,” he remarked.

He alleged that the BJP’s urban model is built purely on perception management — filled with slogans, advertisements, and photo opportunities — while the actual infrastructure is crumbling. “The truth of BJP’s urban planning lies in the cracked bridges and collapsing roads,” he said.

Dr Choudhary cited several examples: a ₹1,000 crore overbridge in Jabalpur developed cracks within months of its inauguration; a ₹10 crore road in Katni deteriorated within six months; in Bhopal, a railway bridge collapsed partially, creating 20-foot-deep potholes, while the G.G. Flyover has become a symbol of shoddy construction. The city’s “90-degree flyover turn”, he added, has become a national joke.

He claimed that widespread collusion among contractors, officials, and ruling leaders has institutionalised corruption. The BJP’s so-called Smart City projects, he said, have collapsed under the weight of greed and opacity, leaving urban Madhya Pradesh unprepared for the future.
