Kolkata, Oct 17 (UNI) IndiGo Airlines has decided to start Kolkata-London direct flight service from October 26, conceding a long-standing demand of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to resume aerial connectivity between the UK and Kolkata.
Banerjee during her visit with a business delegation from the state in March to the UK has appealed to the Indian High Commission for starting a direct flight between London and Kolkata. For now the private airliner IndiGo has decided to start a one-stop flight via Mumbai from October 26 onwards.
The absence of a direct flight from Kolkata to London has forced travelers to take connecting flights from other states like Delhi or Mumbai, or even from international hubs such as Dubai or Qatar, leading to significant travel time and inconvenience.
Banerjee had urged the Indian High Commission to facilitate the launch of a direct Kolkata-London flight.
She said, “Bengal is not far. A direct flight from London to Kolkata will make travel easier. I will request the UK Ambassador to look into this. IndiGo has taken by announcing its own Kolkata–London flight service, marking a major boost in connectivity between eastern India and the UK.”
Air India last operated its direct Kolkata London flight on March 20, 2022.
