Married women observe day-long fasts:Pray for long life of their husbands on Karwa Chauth

Bhopal: The city of Bhopal witnessed vibrant and heartfelt celebrations of Karwa Chauth on Friday, as married women across the city observed the sacred fast with deep devotion and traditional fervor.

The festival, which holds special significance for married Hindu women across the country, was marked by early morning rituals. Women woke up before sunrise to consume Sargi— a traditional sweet and dry fruit platter sent by their mothers-in-law — before beginning a rigorous nirjala vrat (waterless fast) that lasted until moon rise.

Throughout the day, women refrained from both food and water, dedicating their fasts to the health, longevity, and prosperity of their husbands. In the evening, community gatherings and temple visits were organized where women dressed in vibrant ethnic attire, applied mehndi, and performed Chauth Mata puja, listened to the Karwa Chauth Katha, and took part in Aarti rituals.

As night fell, women eagerly awaited the sighting of the moon, often using sieves and lamps as part of the ceremonial worship. Once the moon was visible, the fast was broken with water and a sweet, offered by their husbands — symbolizing love and companionship.

From traditional rituals to modern celebrations, Karwa Chauth in Bhopal this year beautifully blended faith, culture, and community spirit, with women reaffirming their marital vows through age-old customs.
