Indian railways to go gate-free by 2030

Kochi, Oct 10 (UNI) All railway gates in India will be eliminated by 2030 as part of the country’s large-scale modernization of the railway network.

With the introduction of new-generation trains and advanced infrastructure, all level crossings will be replaced with underbridges or overbridges, ensuring smoother and safer rail transport, said union Minister of State for Fisheries, Minority Affairs George Kurian.

As part of India’s fast-paced transformation in the transport sector, more Vande Bharat and high-speed trains with state-of-the-art facilities will soon be introduced across the country.

In the future, long-distance and express trains will halt at more stations to meet public needs, said George Kurian, who flagged off the Thiruvananthapuram–Kannur Jan Shatabdi Express at Changanassery on Thursday.

He said 35 railway stations in Kerala have been selected under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with ₹2,500 crore earmarked for their modernization.

Stating that all stations in India will eventually be upgraded to Amrit Bharat standards, the Minister described roads and railways as the twin pillars of national progress.

He also announced that Changanassery station will be connected with the proposed Sabari and Punalur railway lines, opening new avenues for regional development, as the station has witnessed a remarkable increase in passenger traffic and revenue in recent years.
