CBI arrests 3 postal department officials in Meghalaya in bribery case

New Delhi/Shillong, Oct 7 (UNI) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday said it has arrested three Postal Department officials for allegedly demanding a bribe equivalent to two months’ salary from a man to release his pay, which had been withheld by the department for the last ten months.

The CBI registered a case on October 4 against the three accused: Adarsh Kumar, Assistant Branch Post Master, Williamnagar, East Garo Hills, Meghalaya; N. Hemanta Meitai, Sub-Division Inspector; and Arjun Reang, Postman.

The First Information Report (FIR) was lodged based on a complaint from a Gram Dak Sevak, Block Post Master of the Rongjeng Sub-Office, East Garo Hills, Meghalaya.

The complainant alleged that the accused demanded a bribe- equivalent to two months of his salary- to release his pay, which had been withheld by the Postal Department for ten months.

After negotiation, the accused agreed to accept a bribe of Rs. 30,000 and directed the complainant to pay the amount after the disbursement of his salary.

The CBI laid a trap and caught the Assistant Branch Post Master from Williamnagar red-handed while he was accepting the bribe of Rs. 30,000 from the complainant.

He was subsequently arrested. Later, the co-accused, the Sub-Division Inspector and the Postman, were also arrested from Shillong, Meghalaya, and Ambassa in the Dhalai District (Tripura), respectively, on October 7, 2025.

The CBI conducted searches at the offices and residential premises of the accused in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills, Meghalaya, and Upanagar Village in Ambassa District, Tripura.

These searches led to the recovery of incriminating documents and the seizure of Rs. 2,30,000 in cash from the residence of the accused postman in Upanagar Village, Dhalai District, Tripura.

The arrested individuals will be produced before the competent court. Further investigation into the matter is ongoing.
