Sonia, Kharge condemn attempted attack on CJI, call it ‘unprecedented and shameful’

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and Party President Mallikarjun Kharge today strongly condemned the reported attempt to attack Supreme Court Chief Justic B R Gavai describing it as an assault not on him but on the Constitution.

“No words are adequate to condemn the attack on the Honourable Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court itself. It is an assault not just on him, but on our Constitution as well,” she said in a statement.

Lauding CJI Gavai for his grace and composure in the face of the incident, Sonia Gandhi said, “Chief Justice Gavai has been very gracious but the nation must stand in solidarity with him unitedly with a deep sense of anguish and outrage”.

Congress President Kharge while strongly condemning the incident said it was an “unprecedented, shameful” act that strikes at the heart of India’s judicial system and democratic values.

Kharge said in a post on X that the incident amounted to an attack on the dignity of the judiciary and rule of law.

“When a sitting Chief Justice, who rose to the nation’s highest judicial office through merit, integrity, and perseverance, is targeted in such a manner, it sends a deeply disturbing message,” Kharge said.

“It reflects an attempt to intimidate and humiliate a man who has broken social barriers to uphold the Constitution,” he added.

Kharge further noted that such “mindless acts” reflect how hate, fanaticism, and bigotry have grown in society over the past decade.

“On behalf of the Indian National Congress, I condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms. The safety and security of our Judiciary is paramount. Let justice and reason prevail, not intimidation,” he asserted.

In an unusual incident at the Supreme Court today, a man dressed in a lawyer’s robe allegedly attempted to throw an object at Chief Justice of India Gavai during court proceedings. He was swiftly overpowered and escorted out by security personnel. The disruption led to a brief halt in proceedings before normalcy was restored.
