Fast food crisis: Poor diet stalling youth health and growth

  • Fast food, outside food reducing physical capacity, increasing stress

Bhopal: The proliferation of fast food, street fare, and outside dining among youth is posing a significant hazard to public health. According to Dr. Reeta Jain, former Dietitian at Delhi’s Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, improper nourishment not only disrupts the digestive system but also diminishes physical capacity and exacerbates mental disorders like stress.

Diet is essential in youth

Adolescence is a crucial period marked by rapid physical and mental development. To maintain high energy levels and essential activity, a nutrient-dense diet is paramount.

Nutrients are essential

A healthy diet must incorporate all essential nutrients—protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. This necessitates the consumption of whole grains, legumes, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, eggs, and lean meats. Conversely, the intake of salt, sugar, and oily substances must be curtailed.

Proper diet helps with stress

Youth commonly face career- and future-related stress. Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, such as walnuts, fish, and chia seeds, can effectively reduce stress hormone levels. However, many wrongly increase their intake of caffeine (via tea/coffee) and sugary foods during stressful periods, which should be avoided.

Proper nutrition for health

Adequate nutrition coupled with physical activity provides a shield against chronic diseases like obesity, hypertension, heart disease, Type-2 diabetes, and cancer.

Physical growth also affected

The current shift in dietary habits frequently leaves the body deficient in vital nutrients, negatively impacting physical development, notably stature (height). Consuming protein-rich foods, dairy, and nuts/seeds promotes strong bones and healthy growth, positively influencing an individual’s final height.
