Rejection only fueled me more: Bhumi Pednekar

Singapore, Oct 4 (UNI) Bollywood actress Bhumi Pednekar has shared that criticism throughout her career has strengthened her resolve and motivated her further.

At the Milken Institute’s 12th Asia Summit, among the leading leaders from across the world, Bollywood actress Bhumi Pednekar impressed everyone with her personal story and words of courage and responsibility.

Reflecting on her journey, Bhumi Satish Pednekar spoke about her early years in cinema and the challenges that shaped her path. “I always knew I wanted to be an actor, but growing up, I didn’t see women like me on screen. I didn’t feel represented, and every time I told people about my dream, I was laughed at. That rejection only fueled me more—I thought, I’ll show you.”

Her breakthrough performance in “Dum Laga Ke Haisha” proved pivotal, portraying a woman navigating societal expectations of beauty. The film, centering on a woman constrained by society’s narrow definitions of beauty, illuminated for Pednekar the profound capacity of cinema to engender empathy, confront societal taboos and catalyse meaningful dialogue and advocacy.

“That’s when I realized the kind of work I wanted to do, and why I’ve had the courage to say no to roles that didn’t align with that journey”, she added.
