Guwahati, Oct 3 (UNI) England Women secured a dominant 10-wicket victory over South Africa Women in the fourth match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 at Barsapara Cricket Stadium here today.
Electing to bowl after winning the toss, England restricted South Africa to a mere 69 runs before completing a comfortable chase of 73 runs without losing a wicket.
Chasing a modest target, England’s openers Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones (not out 40) guided the side to victory in 14.1 overs, ensuring a clinical finish with 73 without loss. Beaumont contributed 21 runs, combining steady accumulation with smart strike rotation, while Jones anchored the innings with a composed 40. Extras played a notable role in the low-scoring game, with South Africa conceding 12 runs.
South Africa struggled from the outset, losing wickets at regular intervals. Captain Laura Wolvaardt was dismissed early for 5, while Tazmin Brits fell for 5, and Sune Luus added only 2. Marizanne Kapp (4) and Anneke Bosch (6) fell cheaply too as England’s disciplined bowling attack ensured regular breakthroughs.
Linsey Smith was particularly effective, claiming three crucial wickets, while Nat Sciver-Brunt (2/5) and Sophie Ecclestone (2/19) also made significant inroads. Lauren Bell (1/24) and Charlie Dean (2/14) contributed with the ball, keeping the pressure on the South African batswomen throughout.
The innings saw South Africa’s batswomen crumbling against England’s tight line and length. Wickets fell in quick succession, with the last pair managing just 6 runs before the team was bowled out in 20.4 overs. Extras, mostly in wides, marginally padded South Africa’s total, but the total of 69 was never enough to pose a challenge.
England’s performance highlighted a balanced combination of bowling discipline and batting composure, reflecting the side’s experience in pressure situations.
The victory gives England Women a strong momentum in the tournament as they aim to maintain their unbeaten streak in the early phase of the World Cup.
Umpires for the match were Eloise Sheridan and Shathira Jakir, with Jacqueline Williams serving as third umpire and Trudy Anderson as match referee. The match saw support from both teams’ coaching staff, with England led by Charlotte Edwards and Luke Williams, while South Africa’s squad was guided by Mandla Mashimbyi and Claire Terblanche.
The win strengthens England Women’s position in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, while South Africa will look to regroup and bolster both batting and bowling performances in their upcoming matches.
