Bengaluru, Sep 25 (UNI) Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has officially signed with the Sydney Thunder to play in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), marking a historic first for a major Indian cricketer in the tournament.
Ashwin, who recently retired from the IPL and international cricket, had earlier registered for the International T20 League (ILT20) in Dubai and attracted attention from four franchise teams, before finalizing terms with Sydney Thunder.
The decision was influenced by the team management’s clarity on Ashwin’s role and the opportunity to play under former Australian batsman David Warner’s leadership. “Sydney Thunder clearly communicated how they plan to use me and showed faith in my abilities. I am excited to contribute and play for the Thunder nation,” Ashwin said.
Sydney Thunder’s General Manager, Trent Copeland, expressed enthusiasm over the signing, stating, “Ashwin’s experience and skills impressed the club. He is also eager to play alongside Australia’s spinners Tanveer Sangha and Chris Green. This is one of the biggest signings in BBL history, featuring an iconic Indian cricketer.”
At 39, Ashwin joins the ranks of Unmukt Chand (Melbourne Renegades) and Nikhil Chaudhary (Hobart Hurricanes) as Indian players participating in foreign leagues post-retirement from Indian cricket.
Following his IPL retirement last December, Ashwin is now available for international T20 leagues and will also represent India at the Hong Kong Sixes.
This signing underscores Ashwin’s ongoing influence in global T20 cricket and marks a new chapter in his illustrious career.
