Cabinet approves phase-III medical expansion: Over 10,000 new MBBS and PG seats to boost India’s healthcare capacity

New Delhi, Sept 24 (UNI) The union Cabinet today granted approval for Phase‑III of a centrally sponsored scheme aimed at creating 5,000 additional postgraduate (PG) seats and 5,023 more MBBS (UG) seats in existing state, central and standalone medical colleges and hospitals with an increased cost ceiling of Rs 1.50 crore per seat.

The total outlay for both schemes from 2025–26 to 2028–29 is estimated at Rs 15,034.50 crore, with the central share being Rs10,303.20 crore and the state share amounting to Rs 4,731.30 crore. According to an official statement here, the scheme is expected to significantly augment UG medical capacity, improve the availability of specialist doctors through the new PG seats, and allow the introduction of new medical specialties in government institutions.

The expansion aims to leverage existing infrastructure in a cost-effective manner and strengthen tertiary care delivery in the public sector. The scheme is expected to bring a range of long-term benefits that will significantly strengthen the healthcare and education sectors in the country.

It will offer enhanced opportunities for students to pursue medical education within India, while also improving the quality of medical education and training to meet the global standards. The creation of additional PG and UG seats will ensure a steady supply of doctors and specialists, helping to position India as a global hub for affordable healthcare.

Furthermore, the expansion will lead to better access to healthcare services in remote and underserved areas, addressing regional disparities in medical infrastructure. As per the statement, the Health Ministry will soon release detailed guidelines for execution and monitoring of the programmes.
