New Delhi, Sept 24 (UNI) The BJP today lashed out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over remarks made in an interview to the Financial Times, accusing him of attempting to undermine public faith in the Election Commission and India’s democratic institutions through a “propaganda-based strategy.”
Addressing a press conference in the national capital, BJP spokesperson Shahzad Poonawalla referred to Gandhi’s reported assertion that the Congress party’s strategy was to “create doubt” about the credibility of the electoral process, “not based on evidence, but on propaganda.”
“This is not a political critique. It is a calculated attempt to sow distrust in constitutional institutions,” Poonawalla said.
He alleged that the Congress, which is currently holding its Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Bihar, should now be referred to as BVC – “Bharat Virodhi Committee” (Anti-India Committee).
“When I read the interview, it didn’t seem like a statement from a leader of the Opposition. If LOP stood for ‘Leader of Propaganda’ or ‘Leader of Pakistan,’ then perhaps such an interview with the Financial Times would make sense,” Poonawalla remarked.
Drawing a contrast with the ongoing GST Bharat Festival, Poonawalla alleged that in Bihar, the Congress-RJD alliance was engaged in a “festival of abuses.”
He claimed that derogatory language has been used multiple times in recent weeks for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother.
He cited incidents in Darbhanga and Samastipur where, according to him, objectionable remarks were made from Congress and RJD platforms, respectively.
While the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has neither apologised nor condemned the incident, party leader Tej Pratap Yadav reportedly called for strict action, Poonawalla noted.
Responding to Gandhi’s claim that “a Dalit girl cannot become a doctor because doors are closed for SC/STs,” Poonawalla said the statement was misleading and factually incorrect.
“Every year, thousands of SC/ST students gain admission to medical colleges through reservation. The Modi government has increased medical seats, established new colleges, and continued reservations. Contrary to Gandhi’s claims, doors have not been shut, they are more open than ever,” he said.
The BJP spokesperson alleged that Gandhi was attempting to mislead the nation with falsehoods, but asserted that the people of India are well aware of the ground realities under the current government.
