JP Nadda asks food regulators to strengthen safety norms amid changing dietary habits

New Delhi, Sep 23 (UNI) Acknowledging the vital contribution of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Ministry of Health in elevating food safety benchmarks, union Health Minister JP Nadda today called upon food regulators to remain alert to shifting dietary patterns and market trends, and to revise safety norms and regulations accordingly.

Addressing the gathering during the unveiling of the logo for the Global Food Regulators Summit (GFRS) 2025, scheduled to take place from September 26 to 27 here, alongside the World Food India 2025 event organised by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Nadda emphasised the need for a multidimensional strategy to safeguard public health.

“Ensuring that the food we consume is safe and wholesome requires vigilance and adaptability from regulators. They must keep pace with evolving food habits and market dynamics, updating safety standards, rules, and regulations in response,” he stated.

Highlighting the summit’s theme, ‘Evolving Food Systems- Yatha Annam Tatha Manah’, the Minister noted that it underscores the deep connection between food quality and the wellbeing of the mind and society at large. “Food is not merely sustenance; it influences physical health, mental balance, emotional stability, and social harmony,” he added.

Nadda further described the summit as a distinctive forum for international regulators to exchange ideas, harmonise standards, bolster risk assessment frameworks, and explore innovations in food safety technologies. The overarching aim, he said, is to protect consumer health while promoting equitable trade, innovation, and sustainable food systems that benefit all stakeholders.

The event will also witness the launch of the ‘Eat Right Thali’ book by FSSAI, which celebrates India’s diverse culinary traditions and balanced nutrition. Showcasing traditional thalis from every state, the publication highlights indigenous ingredients, cooking methods, and time-honoured dietary wisdom. It aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of utilising traditional diets to combat obesity and lifestyle-related ailments.

The summit’s programme includes keynote addresses by global experts, plenary and technical sessions, and bilateral and multilateral discussions aimed at tackling contemporary and emerging food safety challenges.
