Bhopal Municipality replaces aging fleet

  • Greenlights Rs 545 crores sewerage project

Bhopal: In a move to modernize the city’s infrastructure, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved a comprehensive plan to replace its fleet of aging vehicles and invest heavily in a new sewerage network. The decision was made during a Mayor-in-Council (MIC) meeting chaired by Mayor Malti Rai, where several key proposals were passed.

= Modernizing the fleet

The BMC will begin a phased retirement of 266 vehicles that are over 15 years old. This initiative aligns with the new Motor Vehicles Act of 2023, which aims to improve road safety and reduce environmental impact. The transportation department has identified the vehicles and will begin the process of replacing them to ensure the city’s services remain efficient.

= Major infrastructure investment

In a significant stride for urban development, the MIC also approved sewerage projects worth Rs 545 crore. These projects, part of the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, will be implemented in three phases to expand the city’s sewerage network and upgrade treatment plants. Construction is expected to commence in January 2026. The council also approved several housing initiatives, providing relief to families in slums and allocating funds for the transfer of residents under various government schemes. Additionally, the BMC will now offer incentives to the children of its employees who achieve academic merit in their 10th and 12th-grade board exams, and has granted approval for temporary markets for the upcoming festive season.
