New Delhi, Sep 11 (UNI) The Supreme Court today extended the interim order granting anticipatory bail to Poovai Jegan Moorthy, MLA from KV Kuppam, Tamil Nadu, in a case alleging his involvement in the abduction of a minor boy.
A Bench of Justice Manoj Mishra and Justice N.K. Singh was hearing Murthy’s appeal against the Madras High Court order dismissing his anticipatory bail plea.
During the hearing, Advocate Muthucharan Sundresh, representing Moorthy, informed the Court that the parties had reached a settlement and filed an affidavit to that effect before the magistrate’s court.
Taking note of this development, the Bench extended the interim protection from arrest and listed the matter for final disposal next week.
The case stems from a complaint filed by Lakshmi, the mother of the minor boy, who alleged that her elder son had eloped with a girl without her family’s consent. Subsequently, miscreants along with the girl’s relatives allegedly entered Lakshmi’s house in search of the couple.
Failing to find them, they allegedly abducted her younger son, aged 18, and later dropped him near a hotel in an injured condition.
The initial FIR registered by the Thiruvallur Police Station invoked sections 189(2), 329(4), and 140(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Following an alleged confession by a co-accused, the FIR was modified to include sections 189(2), 332(b), 140(1), and 61(2) of the BNS.
Moorthy has maintained that his involvement was limiting to advising the girl’s parents, who had approached him, and that he merely referred them to a lawyer and suggested legal remedies.
The Supreme Court’s extension of the interim bail order ensures the MLA remains protected from arrest until the matter is finally adjudicated. The case is now slated for further hearing next week.
