Congress accuses BJP of lawlessness in Ujjain

Ujjain: In a dramatic escalation of political confrontation in Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav’s home constituency, the Congress has accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers of unleashing open hooliganism while alleging that the police and administration acted in a partisan manner. The Congress said the violence had tarnished the image of Ujjain, the revered city of Baba Mahakal, by reducing democratic norms to a “shameful spectacle”.

The incident took place when a large gathering of BJP workers marched towards the Congress office. Congress leaders claimed that instead of restraining the mob, the local police operated like “agents of the BJP”, making barricading a mere formality.

Led by Tarana MLA and Ujjain Rural District Congress President Mahesh Parmar, along with City President Mukesh Bhati, Congress workers staged a defiant counter-protest. According to party sources, slogans were raised, tempers flared, yet the Congress’s “organised and disciplined resistance” foiled what it described as the BJP’s “sinister designs”.

Parmar told reporters, “When the police behave like BJP workers, democracy is dishonoured. We stood firm to protect constitutional values and Gandhi’s ideals against an agenda of hatred and intimidation.”

The Congress alleged that the BJP’s strategy was to provoke violence and potentially vandalise and set fire to its office. Present at the BJP rally were senior leaders including Ujjain MP Anil Firoziya, MLA Kalukheda, the city’s Mayor, all BJP corporators, the Municipal Corporation Chairperson and even the Chief Minister’s sister Kalavati Yadav.

Congress leaders maintained that their show of unity and courage had turned the tide, sending a clear message that “democratic rights cannot be trampled by political muscle power”. They branded the episode a “lesson in resistance” and vowed to continue their struggle against what they called the misuse of police and state machinery.
