Tokyo/ New Delhi, Aug 30 (UNI) After concluding his productive visit to Japan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has departed for Tianjin, China, where he will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit scheduled from August 31 to September 1.
PM Modi will participate in the two-day SCO meeting, joining global leaders for high-level deliberations on key regional and global issues. The 2025 summit is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping new norms for global governance, addressing regional security, connectivity, and sustainable development, and enhancing solidarity among member states.
This marks the fifth time China is hosting the SCO Summit. Chinese President Xi Jinping will chair the proceedings, with over 20 world leaders and 10 heads of international organisations expected to attend. Prime Minister Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin are among the prominent participants, making this the largest and most ambitious SCO gathering to date.
Held under the theme “Upholding the Shanghai Spirit: SCO on the Move”, China has designated 2025 as the “SCO Year of Sustainable Development”.
The summit will not only review the organisation’s achievements over the past 25 years but will also adopt a ten-year development strategy. Key areas of focus will include regional security, economic growth, connectivity, counter-terrorism efforts, and enhanced cultural cooperation.
During the summit, the Prime Minister is expected to hold bilateral meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the event.
“A highly productive visit to Japan concludes. It has charted the way forward for deeper India-Japan cooperation. PM Modi emplaned for China to attend the SCO Summit in Tianjin,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a tweet on X.
PM Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba visited the Tokyo Electron Factory today, where they interacted with top officials of the company and explored areas of technological collaboration, particularly in the semiconductor sector.
Sharing highlights of the visit on X, PM Modi wrote, “PM Ishiba and I visited the Tokyo Electron Factory. We went to the Training Room and the Production Innovation Lab and interacted with top officials of the company. The semiconductor sector is a key area for India–Japan cooperation. In the last few years, India has made many strides in this sector. A lot of youngsters are getting associated with it as well. We seek to continue this momentum in the times to come.”
Reflecting on the broader significance of his Japan visit, PM Modi added, “This visit to Japan will be remembered for the productive outcomes which will benefit the people of our nations. I thank PM Ishiba, the Japanese people, and the government for their warmth.”
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi arrived in Sendai, where he received a rousing welcome from both locals and members of the Indian community. People from all walks of life greeted him with enthusiastic chants of “Welcome to Japan, Modi-san!”
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the journey as a symbol of the growing warmth between the two nations. “A journey of friendship and progress. In a unique gesture symbolising the warmth of the India–Japan friendship, PM Narendra Modi and PM Shigeru Ishiba travelled together to Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, on the Shinkansen,” he posted on X.
