NHRC takes suo motu cognizance of woman’s death at Jaipur hospital

New Delhi, Aug 28 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the death of a 26-year-old woman due to alleged medical negligence at the Women Hospital attached to SMS Medical College, Jaipur.

The incident reportedly occurred on August 21, following a delivery operation performed on August 19, said the NHRC in a statement issued here today.

Citing media reports, the NHRC noted the woman was admitted to the hospital’s Women Hospital wing and underwent surgery for delivery. She suffered excessive bleeding throughout the night and succumbed to her condition the following morning.

Family members have alleged that hospital staff and doctors failed to provide adequate care despite her critical condition and did not permit them to meet her or facilitate her transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Noting the seriousness of the allegations and potential violation of human rights, the NHRC has issued notices to the State Chief Secretary and the Commissioner of Police, Jaipur, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.

The rights body also noted that the principal of SMS Medical College has termed the incident “serious” and assured that an investigation will be conducted. He added that appropriate action would be taken against those found responsible, said the NHRC in the statement.
