NHRC notice to authorities over three labourers’ death in Delhi building collapse

Delhi, Aug 26 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the death of three labourers in a building collapse in the Daryaganj area of Delhi last week.
The victims, all migrant workers from Bihar, died when a portion of an under-construction four-storey building gave way.
Expressing concern over the reported incident, the NHRC today said it has issued notices to the chief secretary of the government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Delhi).
The commission in a statement said it has called for a detailed report within two weeks on the circumstances leading to the collapse and the steps taken thereafter.
The news report, published on August 21, stated that around 15 labourers were present at the construction site at the time of the accident. Authorities have registered a case against the building owner and the contractor responsible for the construction.
The rights body observed that if the reports are verified, the incident raises serious questions about human rights and labour safety standards, warranting urgent attention and remedial action, said the statement.
