New Delhi, Aug 23 (UNI) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has successfully coordinated the return of a wanted fugitive, Sunil Kumar, from Azerbaijan through INTERPOL channels. Kumar, a subject of a Red Notice, was wanted by Jharkhand Police in connection with a serious extortion case.
Kumar, who also used the fake name Mayank Singh, is alleged to be a member of the Aman Sahu gang, a criminal organization operating in Jharkhand. He is accused of sending threatening messages via WhatsApp to demand extortion money from business personnel, coal transporters, and railway contractors. Several cases have been registered against him in various states.
The CBI’s International Police Cooperation Unit (IPCU), in close collaboration with the National Central Bureau in Baku (NCB-Baku), located Kumar in Azerbaijan. Following this, a three-member team from Jharkhand Police was dispatched to Baku on August 19. The team, along with the fugitive, arrived at the CSMI Airport in Mumbai on August 23.
The CBI had published a Red Notice for Kumar through INTERPOL on October 10, 2024, based on a request from Jharkhand Police. An official extradition request was subsequently sent to Azerbaijani authorities through diplomatic channels in January 2025.
This operation highlights the CBI’s role as the National Central Bureau for INTERPOL in India, coordinating with law enforcement agencies globally. In recent years, more than 100 wanted criminals have been returned to India through such international police cooperation.
