- AIIMS Bhopal raises awareness on urinary tract infections
Bhopal: AIIMS Bhopal is actively promoting awareness about Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), a prevalent yet serious health concern, particularly among women. According to experts at the institute, more than half of all women will experience at least one UTI in their lifetime, with many facing recurrent infections if not properly treated. The urinary tract’s shorter length in women, combined with factors such as hormonal changes, pregnancy, and poor hygiene practices, significantly increases their susceptibility to these infections.
Doctors at AIIMS Bhopal highlighted additional risk factors, including inadequate hydration, improper toilet habits, and uncontrolled diabetes. To mitigate the risk of UTIs, they recommend several preventive measures: drinking sufficient water daily, maintaining personal hygiene, urinating after sexual activity, and opting for loose cotton clothing.
Patients experiencing symptoms should seek medical attention promptly
Patients experiencing symptoms such as a burning sensation during urination, frequent urination, or lower abdominal pain are urged to seek medical attention promptly. Experts caution against ignoring early symptoms and discourage the use of antibiotics without professional guidance. They warn that holding urine for extended periods and relying solely on home remedies can exacerbate the issue.
In cases of frequent infections, medical investigations may be necessary to uncover underlying causes like kidney stones or diabetes. AIIMS Bhopal emphasizes the importance of responsible antibiotic use to combat bacterial resistance, which can render common medications ineffective, leading to more severe health complications. Simple lifestyle changes and proper medical supervision can help individuals prevent recurrent infections and protect against antibiotic resistance.
