CPI veteran Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy passes away at 84 in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Aug 23 (UNI) Former Communist Party of India (CPI) General Secretary and veteran parliamentarian Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy passed away late Friday night in Hyderabad.

He was 84. He is survived by his wife Vijayalakshmi and sons Nikhil and Kapil

Reddy, who had been suffering from respiratory problems, breathed his last at 1020 p.m. while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Gachibowli. His eyes were donated to L V Prasad Eye Institute.

Born on March 25, 1942, in Kondraopalli village of the then Mahabubnagar district, Reddy rose from student activism to become a two-time MP from Nalgonda and later led the CPI as its General Secretary from 2012 to 2019.

He played a key role in lowering the voting age from 21 to 18, championed causes of farmers, workers and the downtrodden, and was known for his clarity in political analysis.

His mortal remains will be kept at Magdum Bhavan in Himayathnagar on Sunday for party workers and admirers to pay their respects, before being handed over to Gandhi Medical College.

Condoling his death, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said the nation has lost a leader who left a mark in national politics.

BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao recalled Suravaram’s lifelong commitment to the oppressed. Leaders across political parties paid rich tributes, describing his demise as a huge loss to Telangana and Indian politics.
