Using abusive language on social media is also ragging: Dr Kakoli Rai

  • BHMHRC kicks off anti-ragging week

Bhopal: The Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) has launched its annual Anti-Ragging Week, running from August 12 to 18, with a clear message: harassment now includes online abuse. The week-long event began with a special awareness program to educate students on the various forms of ragging and its severe consequences.

Esteemed psychologist Dr. Kakoli Roy, the event’s keynote speaker, emphasized that ragging is no longer confined to physical or direct bullying. “Verbal abuse or harassment on social media platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook is also considered ragging,” she stated. Dr. Roy highlighted that such acts can have a profound psychological impact on victims, leading to insomnia, anxiety, depression, and in extreme cases, suicidal tendencies. She urged students to immediately report any ragging incidents to teachers, friends, or the anti-ragging helpline.

BMHRC In-charge Director Dr. Manisha Srivastava assured students that the hospital maintains a harmonious and ragging-free environment. She encouraged students to be sensitive towards their peers and prioritize helping patients. Dean Academics Dr. Surbhi Sahay added that the institution has taken all necessary steps to prevent ragging and that faculty members are always available to support students.
