New Delhi, Aug 11 (UNI) Several INDIA bloc leaders, including leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi, were detained by police today while participating in a protest march towards the Election Commission office.
After his detention, Rahul Gandhi told media that the alleged “vote chori is now out in the open”.
He asserted that the issue transcends politics and strikes at the very heart of India’s democratic foundations.
“This fight is not political, it’s a fight to safeguard the Constitution,” Gandhi said, underscoring the need for a clean and transparent voter list to uphold the fundamental principle of one person, one vote.
Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge talking to media slammed the Central government and the Election Commission for restricting the Opposition’s peaceful march, questioning what the authorities were “afraid of” if the leaders were simply seeking a democratic dialogue.
“If the government doesn’t allow us to reach the Election Commission, then we don’t understand what they are afraid of,” Kharge said.
Kharge stressed that all MPs from the Opposition were participating in the march peacefully. “We wanted the Election Commission to call all MPs. We would hold a meeting and present our respective sides. But the Election Commission is saying that only 30 members should come. How is this possible?” he questioned.
Those detained included Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KS Venugopal, Akhilesh Yadav, Dimple Yadav, Sanjay Raut, Tiruchi Siva, Mahua Moitra, Randeep Surjewala, among others.
