Delhi man held for wife’s murder after 21 years

New Delhi, Aug 4 (UNI) The Crime Branch of Delhi Police today said it arrested a man who had been absconding for over two decades after allegedly murdering his wife in 2004.

The accused, Veerpal alias Maiju (60), a native of Farukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended by a team of the Northern District Range (NDR) from Bakshi Ka Talab in Lucknow, where he had been living under a changed identity as Vijay alias Ramdayal.

The case goes back to September 22, 2004, when Veerpal allegedly attacked his wife and child at their rented accommodation in Jahangirpuri, northwest Delhi. The wife succumbed to her injuries, while the child survived and later identified Veerpal and his brother Suresh as the assailants. Suresh was arrested earlier and is currently serving a life sentence at Tihar Jail.

The arrest followed extensive efforts by a team from the Northern District Range, led by Inspector Vivek Malik, and supported by sub-inspectors Imran Khan, Devi Dayal, Gurmeet, Umardeen, and head constable Ramnaresh. The team deployed both manual surveillance and technical inputs to track the accused.

Police said Veerpal was declared a proclaimed offender in January 2005 in connection with FIR No. 681/2004, registered at police station Jahangirpuri under Sections 307/302/34 IPC. Since then, he had managed to avoid arrest by severing ties with his village and adopting a new name.

DCP Crime Aditya Gautam said, “Despite changing his identity and starting a new life in Lucknow, where he remarried and fathered three daughters, justice caught up with him after 21 years.

Further legal proceedings are underway, police said.
