Earthquake of 6.5 magnitude recorded near Severo-Kurilsk

Moscow, Aug 4 (UNI) A magnitude 6.5 earthquake occurred today near the Russian town of Severo-Kurilsk in the northern Kuril Islands, south of Kamchatka, Elena Semenova, head of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station, told Sputnik.

“A magnitude 6.5 earthquake was recorded in the Pacific Ocean on August 4 at 3:20 pm local time [04:20 GMT]. The epicenter was located 232 kilometers [144 miles] east of Severo-Kurilsk on Paramushir Island, with the hypocenter 62 kilometers deep,” Semenova said.

According to the seismologist, residents of Severo-Kurilsk felt a magnitude 4 aftershock.

On July 30, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, becoming the strongest in the region since 1952, with two more earthquakes with magnitudes of 6.0 and 5.1 respectively following it on July 31.
